Road Bike Party 2...

Martyn Ashton is a legend, and after filming Road Bike Party suffered a broken spine and is currently in a wheelchair. Road Bike Party 2 puts together some footage he was in the process of making with new footage from some friends of his. You will enjoy... I have no doubt.

I want to be like my mum!

Charlie and I got home from the park the other day to find P on the turbo. After much asking, and serious adjustments,  we got him going on the turbo. He loved it!

New bike!

How cool is that?! A tandem for a Charlie.  Luckily it was a perfect autumn evening for a long test ride.

Delayed update. We went upto the lake District for the national 100 mile tt champs.

The weather was perfect, which made keeping cool a priority.  Luckily in the Lakes there are lots of opportunities to undertake cold water immersion!

Silly hat, but worth the effort!

It was P's birthday today. She celebrated by winning the national 100 mile time trial championships in 4:05, 5 min ahead of second place.

Marginal Gains...

Charlie as been watching carefully and now knows that every little thing counts when you're looking to go faster.

From aero helmets...

To optimising your position on the bike...

It all adds up!

Charlie's first bike commute...

Forsaking his normal mode of transport (trailer bike) C took the initiative and wanted to get to Rainbows under his own steam this morning.

15 minutes of pavement riding later we'd done it!

More post-40 miler analysis

After last weeks 40 I was feeling so bad I thought I'd better record exactly how bad I felt as well as the lessons I learnt so I fixed those mistake before the 100... watch and laugh at my expense!

Watch "post race analysis..." on YouTube

This evening the little man gained his first swim badge, you can see the skills that earned it in action in this clip (over keen dad content,  beware! )

Charlie and Mattie racing cousins!

Huge thanks to Hereford tri club for putting on such a great kids race.  Charlie and Mattie loved it and proudly wore their medals!

The face of...

... a man who hasn't had a great 40 miler.

Lots to learn before the 100. Lots and lots!

Those poxy chickens....

... Have got a lot to answer for! Poor little C has been visited by the spot fairy.

While I appreciate that as Charlie's dad he can do know wrong in my eyes, I must say that has been a little stoic in the face of what must be a pretty tedious bout of spotty pustules.

Tractors in the distance...

...require careful watching.

And my legs have got post marathon hurt!

The estuary at Llanelli...

Non-runners will appreciate the natural beauty. Runners will think "Thats a nice flat but windy place to hold a marathon".

Both groups are correct.

Five days finished...

...and it got a not tedious towards the end. The most noticeable effect was a lack of energy for any exercise above walking pace.

Lets hope a day of stuffing myself with carbs today will fix that.

Pics of yesterdays food. Porridge this morning!

Day 2 of the high fat diet...

Dinner on day 2 of the high fat experiment.  More bacon, this time with egg, garlic and chilli flakes. On the ubiquitous mountain of salad.

So far its not been too bad. I'm not hungry, or overly tired. I'm not sure i would lose weight if I maintained this... but thats not the point. The big question is how would I feel if I trained, but I know the answer to that... rubbish!

One day left... or do I carry on for the suggested 5 followed by a day of monster carb scoffing? Stupid to experiment with a marathon on Sunday (albeit a C-race)?

What do you think???

Experiment time...

With my second training race coming up (Llanelli marathon this Sunday) and time ticking to the 100 miler its time to start some radical thinking.

Cue my first foray into pre-exercise high fat diets.

The idea is to have no carbs for 5 days, then gorge yourself on carbs the day before the race. I want to test it as a potential strategy for Julys 100 miler (i need all the help that bonkers 'get round a 100-er' strategies might give me!)

So far (day 1) i can say its boring and i feel tired, but not hungry. Its also really difficult, an insight to my carb-based endurance sport eating habits.

I think tomorrow will be harder!

Ive posted photos of my dinner, bacon and salad. Yum!

More Marshalling action...

Watch "Hereford Duathlon Marshalling" on YouTube

Marshalling the Hereford Duathlon...

...Is a muddy and time intensive  business. However, with the aid of a cow bell, shouting at competitors (encouragement, not abuse!), raisins, cakes, a toy aeroplane and lots of singing we have passed the time successfully.

Spring is here...

And so its time for first mow. C was kind enough to help, so it only took twice as long as normal.

The best name ever?

A lap of Norwich Cathedral was enjoyed by C, the stained glass windows and the roof height were particularly interesting to the little man.

Of most interest to me was spotting what I think is in the top 5 best names ever...

First outing on the Trailerbike.
Destination = Asda, purpose = hot chocolate!

The next step towards bike freedom...

After much enthusastic hacksawing of the seatpost Charlie was able to just touch the pedals and we were off! Off to the local park with a very pleased little boy.
