Mayhem...

Not my finest hour. .. and I learnt a lot. I've done Mayhem six times now and this was, by far, the lowest ebb. We had a good team, but for the first time it was a team built to race, even though we knew there was no chance of getting on the podium. Unfortunately that means that when the race stops being a race and turns into a death march the reason for being there evaporates... which at 2 am leaves a big hole in the motivation!

Basically it turns this...

into this...

via this...

and this...

Not to worry, fortunately it's just a race...

Of course, lots of teams did finish (including great performances from The Incredibles and our own COB vets mixed team who clawed themselves up the leader board as others (like us) dropped out. A huge performance by Mark, Adam and Neil meant they finished despite only having 3 riders. Stu gets a big shout for being Mr Organised and sorting the tents, the stove, the generator and all the other stuff + being Mr Unlucky for getting stung for 100 quid after tearing off his rear mech. Anyway, in the end the strong survive... or something like that.

I do think though, that I am over 24 hr racing. 6 times, twice solo, 4 in rain & mud, 5 finishes (two 4ths, 1 3rd, two 1st) and one big fat DNF... and I hate DNF's. I think it's time to focus on the national champs (19th of July) and then stop for a bit... I'm looking forward to this. You keen?
